| Notes |
- From "The History of Martha's Vineyard" by Dr. Charles Banks: Volume III Family Genealogies: pp. 126-145: 'The Daggett Family':
Thomas Daggett, born about 1630, resident of Edgartown, gentleman. He married Hannah Mayhew the favorite daughter of Governor Mayhew about 1657, who was born 15 June 1635 at Medford, Mass. Henceforth his position was assured and throughout his life he was an official of one sort or another in the Mayhew govenment until his death. He was Clerk of Courts and later Justice of the County Courts besides holding local offices in the shire town. He died between 13 April and 15 September 1691, leaving no will, and his widow married Samuel Smith.
**********************************************************************
Governor Mayhew speaks of Thomas Doggett in a letter to Governor Winthrop as "my son Doggett, that hath more language than any other Englishman upon the Island, and is a considerable young man".
At the time of his marriage, Thomas Doggett promised that whatever his wife received from her father should be hers to do with as she liked. Record of Dukes and Bristol Counties contain many references to transfers of land by Thomas and Hannah Doggett. Thomas was prominent in local affairs, and at one time is said to have been magistrate of the island. It is said that he changed the spelling of the family name to Daggett, but probably not until near the end of his life.
