    • Edward Brown(Sr) and Margaret Kelly
June 2015-225-252 Edward Brown (Jr) and Bridget Collins
      -----------------------------------------------------------
      225-239 Part 1 of 2
Edward (Ned) Brown(Jr) was born in Limerick Ireland in 1836, and emigrated to Canada in 1850 with his parents Edward and Margaret (Kelly) Brown. He would have been a young man of 14 at that time. The voyage by ship across the Atlantic must have held both adventure and hardship for a person so young. The trip ended in shock when the family arrived in Canada to find Ned's older brother, James, was dead. After working on the railroad for a time, Ned came to the Kinkora area. While his brother Robert bought a farm one and a quarter mile south of Kinkora, Ned became a blacksmith on the northwest corner of the village. (1855)
Ned married Bridget Collins, who was born in 1845, the daughter of Patrick and Jane (York) Collins. They were married in Stratford on July20, 1864. In the early part of their marriage, they lived in a one and a half story frame
house on the same sight as their blacksmith shop. Their children, six girls and two boys, were born there. One of the sons died as a young boy, and one of the daughters
entered the convent and became a Sister of St. Joseph in London. The other six children all married, had families, and stayed in the Stratford area. Bridget died on December 31, 1906, aged 61 years. Edward died on September 24, 1923, age 86 years. They are both buried in the Kinkora
cemetery, close to where they spent most of their lives.
The above story of Edward and Bridget Brown is taken from "Remember Who You Are?, a family history of the White Family, written by Sharon M. Walsh, Bridget and Edward's great-granddaughter. Most of the information about Edward and Bridget's family was supplied by Sharon Walsh, either through her family history booklet or through conversations and correspondence. Barbara Valino, another great-granddaughter of Edward and Bridget has also been very helpful in providing information on the James and Annie Brown, her grandparents, branch of the Ned Brown family.

      Descendants of Edward Brown
Edward Brown and Margaret Kelly June 2015-238

      Generation 1
      1. EDWARD1 BROWN was born about Abt. June 28, 1836 in Ballyhahill, County Limerick,
Ireland1-5. He died on September 24, 1923 in 339 Huron, Stratford, Ontario, Canada at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bannon.6. He married Bridget Collins, daughter of
Patrick Collins and Jane York, on July 20, 1864 in St. Joseph's Church, Stratford,
Ontario, Canada7. She was born on April 05, 1846 in Ontario, Upper Canada1-3. She died
      on December 31, 1906 in Ontario, Canada8.
Edward Brown was baptized on July 08, 1836 in Shanagolden Parish, most likely at the
church of Our Lady of the Visitation, Ballyhahill, County Limrick, Ireland5. Baptismal
Sponsors: July 08, 1836 (Maria Walsh and John StokeW5) He was elected Ellice
Township Council Treasurer between 1873-18799. He was counted in the census in 1881
in Census Place: Ellice, Perth County North, Ontario10. He was employed as a Blacksmith
in 188110. He lived in Lot 29, Concession 7, Ellice Township, Perth County, Ontario,
Canada between 1898-192311. He was buried in September 1923 in St. Patrick's
Cemetery, Kinkora, Ontario, Canada6. His cause of death was Heart Failure1, 3. He was
      also known as Ned4.
      Notes for Edward Brown:
Edward (Ned) Brown was born in Limerick Ireland in 1836, and immigrated to
Canada in 1850 with his parents Edward and Margaret (Kelly) Brown. He would have
been a young man of 14 at that time. The voyage by ship across the Atlantic must have
held both adventure and hardship for a person so young. The trip ended in shock when
the family arrived in Canada to find Ned's older brother, James, was dead.
After working on the railroad for a time, Ned came to the Kinkora area. While his
brother Robert bought a farm one and a quarter mile south of Kinkora, Ned became a
blacksmith on the north west corner of the village. (1855)
At that time a blacksmith shop was very important to the farming community. Ned
tended his forge to heat the iron metal, then placed the red-hot pieces of iron on the anvil
and hammered the pieces into the shapes of farm tools, door and gate hinges, nails and
candle holders. He shaped horseshoes and repaired wagons and buggies.
In the summer the shop was hot and smelled of hot iron and smoke, and the
sounds were of iron hammering on iron and hot metal sizzling in the cold water. The
large doors were left open to let as much of the breeze as possible flow through. In the
winter the shop would have been pleasantly warm.
The blacksmith shop was also an important meeting place where men would meet
and talk about the latest news of the parish. Imagine the discussions that transpired in
1858, when the first frame church was being built just across the corner from the shop, or
in 1867, the year of the confederation. I wonder what was said during the building of the
present church, nicknamed "The Cathedral in the Country" in 1882.
Ned married Bridget Collins, who was born in 1845, the daughter of Patrick and
Jane (York) Collins. They were married in Stratford on July 20, 1864. In the early part of
their marriage, they lived in a one and a half story frame house on the same sight as their
blacksmith shop. Their children, six girls and two boys were born there.
Ned was known as "The Peace Maker" of Kinkora. Whenever disagreements
came up, Ned was called upon to settle the matter. He was both wise and influential.

When a fight would break out during a dance in the parish hall, Ned would put a stop to
it or when decisions needed to be made in the community Ned's opinions would be
sought out. He was elected to the office of treasurer for Ellice Township in 1877.
The family went to daily Mass and because of the closeness of the church, the
girls helped the priest by preparing meals and doing house work for him.
In the year 1871, Ned bought a farm at Lot 29, Concession 7, Ellice Township, for
$1700. This farm was just east of Kinkora. He raised cattle there while continuing to live
in the village of Kinkora. His daughters went regularly to this farm with Ned to "salt" and
help to care for the livestock.
In 1898 Ned and Bridget built a huge two-story house on the farm just east of
Kinkora and moved there with the family members that were still living at home. Ned sold
his blacksmith shop and the frame house to Walter Nichols who continued the trade.
Ned was also a cattle drover. He would buy and sell cattle from the surrounding
farms and after gathering them up would walk them out to Sebringville to load them on
the train. The train then took the cattle on to Buffalo. At times, Ned would bring back
large sums of money with him on his return trip from the Sebringville station.
His family worried about him on such trips, sometimes even fearing for his life.
Ned's daughter, Annie, used to relate how her father was returning from one such trip
when he realized he was being followed. He was just south of the curves on the Kinkora
side road when he started to fear that he would be overtaken before reaching the safety
of the village. He sped the horse and buggy up as much as possible and then rounding
the curves, out of sight of his would be assailant, he quickly came to a halt and hastily hid
the wallet full of money under a pile of rocks. He was then able to once again persevere
in his race towards home. Luckily, with the village quickly coming into sight, the pursuer
fell back, turned around, and went the other way. Ned reached home safely. He returned
early the next morning to retrieve his money, thankful to be able to pay his fellow farmers
for the cattle he had sold.
Bridget died of a stroke on December 31, 1906, aged 61 years. Edward died of
heart failure on September 24, 1923, age 86 years. They are both buried in the Kinkora
cemetery, close to where they spent most of their lives.
The above story of Ned and Bridget Brown is taken from "Remember Who You
Are", a family history of the White Family, written by Sharon M. Walsh, Bridget and
      Edward's great-granddaughter.
Edward's baptismal record found in the Shanagolden Parish Records Volume I
1824-1900 lists his name as "Edmd", the same given name that appears for his father in
books or ledgers found in Ireland. All records in Canada list his name as Edward, the
same as references to his father's given name. It appears that "Edmond" in Ireland
became a Canadian Anglicized "Edward". In any case he is a Junior.
Bridget Collins was buried on January 02, 1907 in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Kinkora,
Ontario, Canada8. Her cause of death was Stroke/Paralysis1, 3, 8.

      Notes for Bridgid Elizabeth Brown:
Newspaper Obituary of Sister Mary St. Bridget
Sister Mary St. Bridget Brown, a valued member of the Sisters of St.
Joseph Community, London, Ontario, died at Mount Hope Convent,
Richmond Street, after an illness of several weeks
Sister St. Bridget was a native of Kinkora, the daughter of Bridget
and Edward Brown of St. Patrick's parish. Having entered the community of
St. Joseph at an early age, she spent forty years of religious life in the
service of the poor at the House of Providence and at Mt. St. Joseph
Orphanage where she was Superior for many years. Here her unbounded
charity found scope in her motherly solicitude for the homeless little ones
whom God's Providence had confided to her tender care. Nor did her
interest in their welfare cease when they passed from the Home out into
the world. She followed the career of each with watchful interest and gave
to those who had come to depend on her as their constant friend a
      Mother's guidance and friendship.
Sister St. Bridget is survived by one brother, Joseph Brown of
Stratford; and three sisters, Mrs. J. Sweeney and Mrs J. Bannon, both of
Stratford, and Mrs George White of Kinkora. Sister M. Lawrence of St.
      Joseph's Community is a cousin.
The funeral services were held at Mount St. Hope Convent on
Saturday, August 18. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by the Chaplain,
Rev. J. Hogan, assisted by Rev. Simon White as deacon and Rev. Austin
Brown, C.S.B. as subdeacon. His Excellency Most Rev. J. T. Kidd, D.D.
assisted with many of the clergy. Internment was made in St. Peter's
cemetery. May her soul rest in peace.
The above obituary was supplied by the Sisters of St. Joseph, London,
