Thomas came to Canada with his parents and siblings, and most likely worked in the Dundas area, possibly with his brother Robert at the same canal company that had employed their older brother, James. When the Desjardins Canal went bankrupt, Thomas and his brother Robert became employed with the Buffalo, Brantford and Goderich Railway. They worked their way on the railroad as far as Stratford where money problems caused the railroad to stop operations, with all the workers being thrown out of work. When his brother Robert bought a hundred and two acre plot of land in Ellice Township outside Stratford, Thomas worked with him clearing some of the land and helping him build a home on the land. On December 11, 1855 Thomas bought the west half of the farm from his brother Robert for four pounds. Thomas built a house three hundred feet directly west of Robert's. The house was similar to Robert's but larger.
Thomas married Catherine Devereaux, who was from Irishtown. Thomas, apart from a few years, was the Ellice Township auditor from 1869 through 1894. He was also a councilor from 1872 through 1875. Thomas and Catherine had ten children. Three of the children died as infants, one died as a teenager, and the other six grew to adulthood. None of
the children ever married, so there are no descendants of this family in later generations.
Catherine was one of twelve children born to John and Eleanor Devereaux. Three of her brothers married three sisters of Margaret Shannahan, Thomas's brother Robert?s wife. Lots of double first cousins in those families!
Thomas Sr. died in 1914 and Catharine passed away in 1931.
In 1921 the original log cabin house was jacked up, put on logs, and rolled one hundred feet north-west. A slightly larger brick addition was built in its place. In 1907, Edward Brown and his sister Agnes bought Lot 26, Concession 6

and farmed there until Ed died in 1950. Tom, Jr., and his sister Kate continued to farm the home farm. Upon Ed?s death, Agnes returned to live with her brother and sister at the home farm. The farm and house is occupied today by Cyril and Gen Brown's oldest son Ben and his wife Heidi.
