1913 Escanaba city directory
Edward Mattson and Frederick Mattson, still at 807 Escanaba Avenue. Edward a laborer, with wife Anna. Frederick a secretary hand.

This record is interesting for a couple of reasons:
-- Who is Anna??? My grandfather Edward did not marry my grandmother until 1926, when he was about 40 years old. It isn't really surprising that there was a previous wife, but this is the only record I have ever seen of one.
-- This is the only record in which Fred identifies himself as Frederick. He had only been in the US about 3 years and perhaps was looking for a more formal alternative to Fred, like his brother's use of Edward instead of Ed.

1922 Escanaba city directory
This record is key in tying "Fred Mattson" to "Carl Alfred Mattson".

When he registered for the draft in 1918, Fred Mattson gave his address as 913 Escanaba Avenue. In 1920, Fred Mattson appears in the Escanaba city directory at 913 1st Avenue N. The name of Escanaba Avenue was changed to 1st Avenue North at around this time, so Fred was at the same address as in 1918. In 1922, "Carl A and Marie A Matson" show up in the city directory at 915 1st Avenue North, next door to the address that Fred Mattson lived at in 1918 and 1920.

From this point forward, it is easy to trace Carl and Marie Mattson through the Escanaba city directories and 1930 and 1940 censuses. When Carl Alfred Mattson/Matson provided his age in 1930 and 1940, his age was consistent with the birth date Fred Mattson provided when he registered for the draft in 1918. When he died in 1954, the obituary mentioned that one of his survivors was a nephew Melvin Mattson in Washington, DC., so this is clearly the correct Carl Alfred Mattson aka Fred Mattson.
