  • Notes
    • From "The Bradford History":

John Howland, on the Mayflower, was swept overboard during a storm. He was able to grasp a halyard astern and hold on. Frequently underwater and nearly drowned, he pulled himself to the Mayflower. The men on the ship, with a boat hook, pulled him aboard.

From "It Began with a Whale" by John Tobey Daggett, copy at Dukes County Historical Society:

John Howland was one of two manservants to Governor John Carver and his wife, Katherine. During the first winter, John and Katherine Carver died. John Howland married Elizabeth, daughter of John Tillie, both of the Mayflower.
