HOMES, William, clergyman, born in the north of Ireland in 1668; died in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, 20 June, 1746. He was well educated, and, coming to New England in 1686, taught three years on Martha's Vineyard. He then returned to Ireland, and was ordained minister at Strabane in 1692, but returned to Martha's Vineyard in 1714: and became a pastor there. His son, Captain Robert, married a sister of Benjamin Franklin. William Homes published sermons on "The Sabbath," on "Public Reading of the Scripture," "Church Government" (1782), "Secret Prayer", and "Government of Christian Families" (1747).

(note: Some dispute the claim that William Homes's son married Benjamin Franklin's sister. He may have been confused with a contemporary, Dr. William Holmes.)
